Recent progress has been made recognizing the challenge and importance of sedimentation in long-term dam viability. Both the Bureau of Reclamation Subcommittee on Sedimentation and the U.S. Society on Dams recently released resolutions:
The SOS encourages all Federal agencies to develop long-term reservoir sediment-management plans for the reservoirs that they own or manage by 2030. These management plans should include either the implementation of sustainable sediment-management practices or eventual retirement of the reservoir. - BOR Subcommittee on Sedimentation
The U.S. Society on Dams encourages all dam owners to develop long-term reservoir sediment-management plans for the reservoirs that they own or manage by 2030. These management plans should include either the implementation of sustainable sediment-management practices or eventual retirement of the reservoir. - U.S. Society on Dams
The Subcommittee now has a National Reservoir Sedimentation and Sustainability Team, which works to provide better education regarding sedimentation and sustainability. Use their information in your communication efforts! The National Reservoir Sedimentation and Sustainability Team recently published a white paper that defines the sedimentation issues and provides a "call to action" to ensure that our nation's reservoirs continue to provide critical societal services for future generations.
