The New Mexico B.A.S.S. Nation has been an active Friends of Reservoirs member for several years. Habitat issues on Elephant Butte Reservoir are particularly challenging due to drought and highly fluctuating water levels due to irrigation demands on the water supply. Earl Conway, New Mexico B.A.S.S. Conservation Director, has met these challenges head on with a "never say never" attitude. Earl has formed partnerships both at the local level and on a statewide basis getting the Bureau of Reclamation and New Mexico Game and Fish Department to work with local partners to make fishing the best that it can be in Elephant Butte. Habitat restoration is a multigenerational issue and Earl has engaged local high school students to assist with the habitat restoration efforts on the lake. Visit Elephant Butte on our "Projects" page to learn more about the project. These efforts were recently recognized by a local television report on the project.
